Lake Mary, FL — FARO Technologies, Inc. has released version 4.0 of its 3-D laser scanning software family: FARO Scene, FARO Scout, FARO Scout LT and FARO Record.

The user-friendly software packages are used for viewing, administrating, calibrating, filtering and managing large, 3-D point clouds collected with the FARO Laser Scanner LS.

"The FARO LS is the most advanced device of its kind, and now can offer even more value to a wide range of industries and applications," FARO President and Co-CEO Jay Freeland said.

Version 4.0 features:

  • Intrinsic use of inclination sensor for faster registration
  • Constraint-plane fit for high-accuracy plane positioning
  • Easier export of slices
  • Export of objects in DXF format
  • Intelligent contrast adjustment to improve point-cloud visualization
  • Automatic filtering

This new release is also multi-lingual, enabling the user to choose from English, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, German, French, Italian and Portuguese.

In addition, FARO Laser Scanner LS features enhanced firmware, which is available for free to existing LS customers.

According to the company, the FARO Laser Scanner LS is a portable, computerized measurement device that creates a high-resolution, 3-D, digital "photograph" by scanning everything in its 360-degree path as far as 76m away. It collects 120,000 points per second with up to 3mm accuracy while the system's laptop computer recreates and records all of the object's 3-D measurements.

The captured data can then be used to create a digital model, or to perform evaluation and analysis against an existing model for anything requiring highly detailed 3-D measurements, including factory planning, building-information modeling — as well as specialized applications ranging from land surveying, recreating accident sites and crime scenes, to digitally preserving historical sites.
