Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs) and Modules
Hamamatsu offers new multi-pixel photon counters, or MPPCs, which are photon-counting devices known as silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). These specialized SiPMs feature high gain, high photon detection efficiency, high-speed response, excellent time resolution, wide spectral response range, and operate on a low voltage.
Although MPPCs are essentially opto-semiconductor devices, these silicon photomultipliers have outstanding photon-counting capabilities that may be used in extremely weak light detection applications at the photon counting level. These SiPM devices are immune to magnetic fields, and highly resistant to mechanical shocks. MPPCs for precision measurement are able to maintain the high photon detection efficiency while providing low afterpulse, low crosstalk, and low dark count.
Hamamatsu also provides a full lineup of MPPC modules capable of measuring light over the range from the photon counting region to the nanowatt region. Each module is equipped with an amplifier, a temperature-compensation circuit, and a high-voltage power supply circuit. Different types of MPPC modules include cooled modules that offer a low dark count, and non-cooled modules that include temperature compensation for stable measurements.
